Ladies field hockey in Glasnevin, Dublin.

The 1sts team battled their way into the final of the division 5/6 Leinster Cup competition yesterday. The match against Bray in Glasnevin was a tough affair but Botanic managed to come out on top by the final whistle.

The first half was a close encounter with the game being played at both ends of the pitch. Both teams were nervy and the goals could’ve come from either team early on. The chants and cheering from the many supporters on the sideline urged the players on to victory.

In the second half, however, Botanic got more into their stride and started to dominate the game. There were a few chances on goal that were very close. One so close, that a Bray defender had to scoop the ball off the line to deny Botanic a goal. It wasn’t until the last five minutes of the match, that Botanic got the winning goal. Forward, Emma Hinchy, with the help of her team mates, managed to get the ball in behind the Bray goalkeeper. It didn’t seem like the game was over yet though, as Bray came back fighting hard for the last few minutes. They even took their keeper off to give themselves an extra outfield player. Botanic defended hard and just at the final whistle, a short corner was awarded to Bray. It was a tense moment for all of the Botanic supporters, but the 1sts defended it well, got the ball away from their goal, and the game was finally over. It was 1-0 to Botanic and they are now into the final of the cup, where they will play Avoca.

A huge thank you to all of the supporters who came out on the day and well done and hard luck to Bray for a great game of hockey! It was an exciting semi-final cup match!
